The private contractor for the $3.5-billion Makati City Subway Project, Philippine Infradev Holdings Inc., has sought international arbitration due to the project’s unfeasibility following a Supreme Court ruling.
The court decision transferred jurisdiction over several subway stations and the depot to Taguig, disrupting the project’s original plans.
Infradev has begun arbitration proceedings at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre to resolve the issue with the Makati government.
Construction was halted in 2023 after the ruling, and the project, which was supposed to be operational in 2024, now faces significant financial losses.
Makati officials are exploring alternatives, including negotiations with a new contractor and possibly converting the subway into a monorail system to maintain local mass transportation development.
