The Department of Transportation (DOTr) plans to seek a private sector partner next year to develop a ferry system linking Manila Bay, Pasig River, Marikina River, and Laguna Lake, aiming to ease congestion in Metro Manila.
Leonel Cray De Velez, DOTr Assistant Secretary, announced the intention to bid out the project following a viability study’s completion, with the feasibility study expected to conclude within the year.
The project’s cost and infrastructure will be determined by a passenger demand review, influencing the acquisition of ferry boats and related facilities, while efforts to integrate multi-modal transport facilities for seamless transfers are also underway.
Additionally, the DOTr eyes deploying electric boats to enhance sustainability and efficiency in domestic shipping, aligning with plans to construct 200 new seaports and expand 14 roll-on/roll-off ports nationwide by 2028.
