The Chinese Embassy in Manila accused some Philippine officials of engaging in “political theatrics” and attempting to escalate tensions between the two countries over the South China Sea.
The statement was a response to Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., who said resisting China’s expansive claims is a key part of the Philippines’ national interest.
The embassy said such remarks distort China’s position and mislead the international community, urging Philippine officials to stop spreading “false information.”
It reiterated that China’s claims in the region are backed by historical and legal grounds, and aligned with international law, including UNCLOS.
The exchange followed the Philippine Coast Guard’s report of three Chinese research vessels spotted inside the country’s exclusive economic zone.
