Akbayan party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña criticized the Senate for allegedly undermining its institution by helping Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa avoid arrest despite a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
He said the Senate should uphold the law rather than shield individuals facing serious charges, calling its actions contrary to its mandate.
Cendaña questioned Senate leadership for allegedly prioritizing the protection of an “international fugitive” over accountability for victims of the Duterte administration’s drug war.
He added that the Senate owes explanations to the families of extrajudicial killing victims and should not resort to excuses or public statements alone.
The lawmaker also said the Senate’s actions could make it complicit in the alleged crimes, reinforcing calls for Dela Rosa to face trial before the ICC.
