The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) urged government officials to protect the integrity of ongoing probes into the alleged corruption in flood control projects, warning that any move to alter Senate leadership could be seen as a cover-up.
In a statement led by CBCP president Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, the bishops called for transparency, access to key documents, and protection for whistleblowers as the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) carries out its investigation.
The CBCP said the ICI must work without political interference to restore public trust, noting that “a nation cannot heal when its moral arteries are clogged by corruption.”
Their statement came amid political tension following Sen. Panfilo Lacson’s resignation as Blue Ribbon chair and speculation of a Senate shakeup.
Former Senate president Franklin Drilon described Lacson’s move as a “king’s gambit” aimed at preserving Senate President Vicente Sotto III’s leadership amid growing discontent in the chamber.
