Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed allowing website publishers to opt out of having their content used in Google’s AI Overviews feature, aiming to curb the tech giant’s dominance in search.
The move follows Google’s designation as having “strategic market status” last year, subjecting it to stricter regulation.
The CMA said the proposal would give businesses and consumers more control, ensure proper attribution of content, and protect publishers—particularly news outlets—from loss of traffic and ad revenue.
Google responded that it is exploring opt-out controls but cautioned that changes must avoid creating a confusing search experience.
Additional measures include displaying prompts to change default search engines and rules to guarantee fair ranking of results, modeled on the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
