Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, principal author of Senate Bill No. 2451, called for the establishment of Ligtas Pinoy Centers to serve as mandatory evacuation shelters in all Philippine cities and municipalities.
Speaking in the Senate on September 18, he emphasized the need for safe, clean, and adequate facilities for disaster victims, citing the country’s vulnerability to natural hazards exacerbated by climate change.
Go pointed out that many current evacuation sites, such as damaged schools and basketball courts, lack proper amenities and hinder recovery efforts.
He proposed annual audits of these facilities to ensure safety and readiness after disasters.
Additionally, Go is advocating for the passage of a separate bill to create a Department of Disaster Resilience to improve the nation’s disaster response and recovery efforts.
