In a major shift, Apple has overtaken Samsung as the world’s leading smartphone vendor, ending the South Korean giant’s 12-year reign. Data from IDC shows Apple sold 234.6 million iPhones in 2023 compared to Samsung’s 226.6 million units, giving Apple a 20.1% market share versus Samsung’s 19.4%.
Analysts attribute Apple’s success to its high-end iPhones and a fragmented Android market filled with rivals like Xiaomi, Transsion, Honor, and Google. Huawei’s strong performance in China also contributed to Samsung’s decline.
Despite this shift, global smartphone shipments still declined 3.2% in 2023 to 1.17 billion units. However, IDC sees signs of recovery, citing strong growth in the second half of the year.
Samsung is poised to unveil new models at an event this Wednesday, hoping to reclaim its top spot. The fight for smartphone dominance looks set to intensify in the months ahead.
