Filipina tennis star Alex Eala stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek, 7-6 (9), 6-2, to advance to the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships on Saturday night.
Playing before a packed Centre Court crowd, the 21-year-old Eala showcased composure and aggressive baseline play in the two-hour, 14-minute match against the six-time Grand Slam champion.
Eala recovered from losing a 5-3 lead in the opening set before winning the tiebreak and dominating the second set with a commanding 4-0 advantage.
The victory marked the deepest Grand Slam run of Eala’s career and moved her within one win of matching the best singles finish by a Southeast Asian player in the Open Era.
She will next face 13th seed Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round after Paolini defeated Maria Sakkari in straight sets.
