The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has identified 252 “ghost” flood control projects after inspecting 10,000 government-approved infrastructures from 2016 to the present, with 20,000 more projects still to be checked.
The findings will be submitted to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, which is investigating alleged collusion among lawmakers, public works officials, and contractors in anomalous flood control deals.
AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said the military, working with the PNP, is consolidating on-site assessments, documentation, and photo evidence, but has not specified the locations or costs of the nonexistent projects.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon tasked security forces to assist in the nationwide verification drive to fast-track the probe.
Amid public outrage over the scandal, AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said the military will scale down its 90th-anniversary celebration to a simple program and a boodle fight with the President.
