AFGHAN REFUGEES TO TRANSIT THROUGH PHILIPPINES FOR US RESETTLEMENT

The Philippines and the United States have agreed to allow a limited number of Afghan nationals to transit through the Philippines for the processing of their special immigrant visas, which are necessary for their resettlement in the US.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) stated that the agreement is pending final domestic procedures and requires presidential ratification.

During their stay, which will be capped at 59 days, the Afghans will be housed and supported by the US government, including provisions for food, medical care, and security.

The agreement has sparked debate, with Senator Imee Marcos expressing concerns about the specifics of the arrangement, while Senator Francis Tolentino supported the deal, citing the Philippines’ historical role in hosting refugees.

The US Embassy affirmed its commitment to assisting those who supported the US government over the past two decades.
