ADDITIONAL FUNDING APPROVED FOR SUGAR WORKERS’ BENEFITS

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has given the green light for extra funding to enhance maternity and death benefits for workers in the nationwide sugar industry.

This decision comes after Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma issued an order authorizing the release of additional reserve funds, amounting to P6.8 million for maternity benefits and P11.76 million for death benefits, for sugar workers through DOLE’s Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns.

These funds will be distributed to DOLE offices in Bicol, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Davao Region, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos), as well as in Iloilo and Negros Occidental.

Previously, the labor department raised the maternity benefits from P5,000 to P8,000, and the death benefits from P10,000 to P14,000 for sugar workers.
