The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to allocate funds to schools to cover graduation expenses, citing rising oil prices that burden both parents and teachers.
ACT Chair Ruby Bernardo also called for an increase in the Personnel Economic Relief Allowance (Pera) from P2,000 to P5,000 to help government employees cope with higher transportation costs.
While DepEd has reminded schools to hold simpler graduation ceremonies, Bernardo said funding should come from the department’s budget so parents can have “zero” expenses.
She suggested using the remaining maintenance and operating funds for stage setups, chairs, and other necessities for graduates, parents, and teachers.
Bernardo emphasized that these measures would relieve financial stress and ensure a meaningful celebration for students amid the country’s current economic challenges.
