The Department of Health (DOH) will acquire 2,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to prevent mpox spread in the Philippines.
Unlike the traditional smallpox vaccine made from the vaccinia virus, Jynneos uses modified vaccinia Ankara, though both are related to the Orthopoxvirus family.
The DOH has requested access to smallpox vaccines from the World Health Organization, with current supplies prioritized for Africa due to urgent needs.
Recently, two additional mpox cases were reported in Metro Manila, raising the total to 12 since July 2022.
Health advocates urge the DOH to expedite influenza vaccine procurement for seniors, highlighting their vulnerability during the rainy season.
