WEST PHILIPPINE SEA TENSIONS HIT LOCAL FISHERMEN

Filipino fishermen are struggling as fish catches in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased by 6.78% in the first half of the year, largely due to geopolitical tensions and overfishing.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) attributes the decline to territorial disputes, rising fuel costs, climate change, and increased competition from foreign vessels.

The Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. noted that Chinese fishing activities have contributed significantly to the depletion of resources in the area.

The loss of coral reefs, largely blamed on Chinese activities, has also hurt fish populations.

Fisherfolk near Panatag Shoal has reported a 60% drop in income following China’s fishing ban in the South China Sea.
