The “veteran” bloc backing Sen. Vicente Sotto III’s bid for Senate president aims to serve as the chamber’s “conscience,” ensuring strict adherence to rules and procedures.
Sotto said his ally, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, suggested renaming the group to the “conscience” bloc to reflect their role as experienced legislators safeguarding transparency and constitutional processes.
The bloc includes Sotto, Lacson, former Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Sen. Loren Legarda.
Sotto acknowledged the Senate leadership race could be unpredictable at the start of the session on July 28 but expects stability later in the year, while remaining open to leading the minority if he loses.
Meanwhile, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said she is not in talks with the veteran bloc as she consults allies about forming an independent minority group.
