The United States and five other countries—Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom—condemned China’s aggressive actions that resulted in damage to two Philippine Coast Guard vessels in the West Philippine Sea.
The incident occurred on August 19 when the ships were conducting lawful operations within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
The US reaffirmed that its Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines extends to attacks on Philippine vessels in the South China Sea.
China, however, defended its actions and warned the US against intervening in its maritime disputes.
Despite the escalating tensions, Philippine officials emphasized that the country will continue to protect its maritime rights while pursuing diplomatic solutions.
