US President Donald Trump said he will speak soon with Russian President Vladimir Putin over reports of a laboratory technician’s death possibly linked to plague in Siberia.
Russia has denied reports of a confirmed plague case or special anti-plague measures, saying the woman’s cause of death remains undetermined and postmortem tests found no plague-related microorganisms.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the World Health Organization urged Russia to provide transparent and complete information about the incident.
Reports said the 28-year-old technician may have contracted pneumonic plague after a laboratory accident, while up to 200 people were reportedly placed under quarantine.
The WHO stressed that timely information is needed to assess potential public health risks, noting that no confirmed plague case has been recorded in Irkutsk.
