Senate Majority Leader Francis “Tol” Tolentino has urged the government to consider leasing ships from foreign countries to expand the Philippines’ maritime fleet and enhance its presence in the West Philippine Sea.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay, Tolentino highlighted that leasing is a faster and more cost-effective option, citing practices of superpowers like France and the UK.
He noted that while building a ship can take up to five years, leased vessels can be quickly deployed for immediate use.
Tolentino emphasized the need for modern vessels for various purposes, including maritime patrols and medical support, especially in light of recent tensions with Chinese vessels at Escoda Shoal.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining a constant presence in the area, advocating for prompt government action to ensure the Philippine Navy remains operationally capable.
