TIMOR-LESTE REJECTS TEVES’ EXTRADITION, CITING TORTURE RISK

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla slammed Timor-Leste’s Court of Appeals for rejecting the Philippines’ extradition request for former Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr., calling its justice system “immature.”

The court ruled that Teves faces a risk of torture and human rights violations if sent back, citing multiple witness recantations and concerns over coercion.

Despite the setback, the Department of Justice (DOJ) plans to appeal the decision, insisting that Teves must face trial for his alleged crimes.

Teves, tagged as a terrorist by the Philippine Anti-Terrorism Council, is accused of masterminding the 2023 assassination of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo.

Meanwhile, Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo expressed frustration over the ruling, hinting at possible external influence on the court’s decision.
