Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. warned that the Philippines is moving too slowly in strengthening its military capabilities and urged faster action to protect the country’s territory and sovereignty.
Speaking at the Philippine Military Academy’s 128th founding anniversary in Baguio City, he said national security plans should have been implemented years ago.
Teodoro said the government is working to improve maritime defense, expand military capabilities, and address infrastructure gaps affecting Armed Forces of the Philippines operations.
He also urged the PMA to prepare future military leaders for emerging technologies, evolving security threats, and new operational demands.
Teodoro stressed that the country cannot afford complacency amid continuing tensions with China in the West Philippine Sea.
