The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Walang Gutom Program has effectively reduced hunger in the Philippines, according to a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
Hunger among program beneficiaries dropped by 4.1 percentage points between October and December 2024, while hunger increased among non-beneficiaries by 6.1 percentage points.
Social Welfare Secretary Rexlon Gatchalian said the success confirms the program’s impact and announced plans to expand it to cover all food-poor households nationwide.
Launched in 2023 and institutionalized in 2024, the program provides P3,000 worth of food credits via an electronic benefit card to low-income families.
The initiative aims to reach 750,000 households by 2025 to help eradicate involuntary hunger in the country.
