South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa handed over 1,632 metric tons of rice to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on August 6, as part of South Korea’s total 2,016 MT donation to the Philippines.
The donation supports the country’s disaster response, climate adaptation, and peace-building initiatives, with 384 MT designated for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Ambassador Lee emphasized the donation as a symbol of solidarity amid global climate challenges, noting recent extreme weather in Korea.
DSWD officials and the World Food Programme (WFP) Philippines also participated in the ceremony, with WFP managing the logistics to ensure the rice reaches vulnerable communities.
This donation builds on previous aid through the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve, including shipments in 2022 and 2023.
