The MPBL has issued a lifetime ban and a P200,000 fine to Michole Sorela of the GenSan Warriors for delivering a sucker punch to Jonas Tibayan of the Mindoro Tamaraws during a game at Batangas City Coliseum.
Tibayan suffered severe injuries, including a broken jaw, busted lip, shoulder fracture, and concussion, and was initially hospitalized locally before being transferred to New Era Hospital in Manila for further treatment.
The incident occurred midway through the third quarter and was captured on video, prompting a swift response from the league.
MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes condemned the act, emphasizing that such behavior threatens player safety and damages the league’s reputation.
The MPBL vowed to uphold strict disciplinary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
