Gilas Pilipinas delivered a stunning upset by defeating World No. 6 Latvia, 89-80, in their opening game at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia.
Led by Justin Brownlee’s impressive performance of 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, the Philippines dominated from the start and maintained their lead throughout the game.
Despite Latvia’s late rally in the fourth quarter, highlighted by Davis Bertans’ efforts, Gilas held on defensively to secure their historic victory.
This win marks the Philippines’ first against a European team in 64 years, boosting their chances to advance further in the qualifiers.
