SENATE PANEL PUSHES OVERHAUL OF JUVENILE JUSTICE ACT

The Senate committee chaired by Sen. Erwin Tulfo will conduct a comprehensive review of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act following a series of serious crimes involving minors.

Tulfo said the review aims to address gaps in the law that may have denied justice to victims and exposed weaknesses in its implementation.

The panel will consult law enforcement, legal experts, social welfare groups, the church, medical professionals, and parents to assess possible reforms.

Among the issues to be examined are the age of criminal liability, the lack of Bahay Pag-asa facilities, intervention programs, and parental accountability.

Tulfo said the goal is to strike a balance between ensuring justice for victims and rehabilitating children in conflict with the law.
