Following a recent Houthi attack on an oil tanker that left a ship carrying 23 Filipinos and two Russians adrift, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has advised Filipino seafarers to avoid sailing in the Red Sea.
The DFA’s advisory highlights the increased danger in the region due to escalating conflict and urges seafarers to exercise their right to refuse sailing in these waters.
Reports indicate that at least three missiles struck the M/T Sounion last Wednesday, causing engine damage but no sinking, with all crew members safely rescued.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac reported that 122 seafarers have already declined to board ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The DFA will enforce a ban on hiring Filipino seafarers for vessels involved in hostage situations or attacks.
