SC URGED TO VOID TAGUIG ORDINANCE INCREASING COUNCILORS

Retired Supreme Court Justice Dante Tinga, along with several non-government organizations, has urged the Supreme Court (SC) to nullify a Taguig City ordinance increasing councilor seats from eight to twelve per district.

In a motion filed, the petitioners argued that only Congress can authorize such changes through proper legislation, not a local ordinance or a concurrent resolution.

The ordinance was passed after the SC’s final ruling transferring the jurisdiction of EMBO barangays from Makati to Taguig.

Tinga stressed that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Congress failed to follow constitutional procedures in approving the increase in councilors.

Petitioners are pushing for a new legislative district for the EMBO areas through a properly enacted law.
