San Miguel Beermen secured their spot in the PBA Finals after defeating Barangay Ginebra, 94-91, in the Commissioner’s Cup. Import Bennie Boatwright Jr. played a pivotal role, scoring 26 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, helping San Miguel sweep the series.
Head coach Jorge Gallent praised the team’s dedication, crediting their off-season hard work for the success. San Miguel’s 44th finals appearance in franchise history marks a significant milestone.
Jericho Cruz contributed 17 points off the bench, while Marcio Lassiter, June Mar Fajardo, and CJ Perez also performed well. The victory served as redemption for San Miguel after being swept by Ginebra in the previous Governors’ Cup.
Ginebra’s Tony Bishop Jr. led their efforts with 25 points and eight rebounds, supported by Scottie Thompson’s 17 points. Despite contributions from Japeth Aguilar, Christian Standhardinger, and Jamie Malonzo, Ginebra fell short.
Malonzo’s absence in the final frame due to a left knee injury impacted Ginebra’s chances of extending the series.
San Miguel, the reigning Philippine Cup champion, now awaits the winner of the Phoenix Super LPG-Magnolia series in the upcoming PBA Finals.
