Rosegie Ramos, a 20-year-old weightlifter, has strengthened her bid for the Paris Olympics by winning a silver and a bronze medal in the Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Ramos secured the silver medal in the snatch category with an 88-kilogram lift and earned the bronze medal in the clean and jerk category with a 102-kilogram lift, resulting in a total of 190 kilograms.
North Korean weightlifter Ri Song Gum claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 220 kilograms, while Japanese athlete Rira Suzuki took home the silver with 191 kilograms. Ri also dominated the snatch and clean and jerk categories.
Ramos’s achievement is significant as she has now jumped to the top 5 in the world rankings for her division, the women’s 49-kilogram category, in the race to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas President Monico Puentevella expressed his confidence in Ramos’s performance and stated that she is now among the top contenders for the Paris Games.
During the competition, Ramos also set a new national record in the snatch category, surpassing her own previous record of 87 kilograms. However, her attempt at a 104-kilogram lift in the clean and jerk category did not succeed.
