The PNP, BJMP, and BFP have backed proposals to raise the compulsory retirement age of their personnel from 56 to 57 to retain experienced officers and support institutional reforms.
During a Senate hearing, Sen. Panfilo Lacson warned that the extension could delay promotions for younger officers.
The National Police Commission also raised concerns about possible delays in rank advancement, while allowing those nearing retirement to leave at 56 could open up positions.
The Department of Budget and Management projected P10.74 billion in initial savings in 2027 from deferred retirement and terminal leave benefits.
However, the DBM and Lacson noted that additional salaries, allowances, and retirement benefits could offset these savings in the following years.
