Former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III said he understood the Supreme Court’s dismissal of three petitions challenging the impeachment court’s voting threshold for convicting Vice President Sara Duterte.
Pimentel said the petitions were premature because no government official has yet been removed through the 14-vote threshold being questioned.
The impeachment court earlier ruled that the two-thirds requirement refers to senators capable of participating in the vote.
Pimentel also praised Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero for his handling of Duterte’s impeachment trial, saying he has been fair and knowledgeable about procedural rules.
The Supreme Court had dismissed separate petitions against the voting rule on procedural grounds, including lack of standing and prematurity.
