Thousands of Filipino and American troops have commenced joint military exercises in the Philippines, known as Balikatan, aimed at bolstering defense capabilities amidst concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region.
The drills, concentrated in northern and western areas near the South China Sea and Taiwan, aim to demonstrate readiness and strengthen alliances.
With China claiming vast territories in the South China Sea and Taiwan, the US has intensified cooperation with regional allies like the Philippines.
This year’s exercises include the participation of the Philippine Coast Guard for the first time, highlighting maritime security concerns.
The drills involve simulations of island recapture and maritime defense operations. The involvement of 14 observer countries, including Australia, France, and others, underscores the international interest in the region’s stability.
The exercises, running until May 10, aim to deepen military collaboration for a safer global community, according to Philippine military chief General Romeo Brawner.
