PHILIPPINES SEEKS EXEMPTION FROM US TARIFFS ON CHIP EXPORTS

The Philippines is seeking an exemption from the planned 100-percent US tariff on semiconductor imports, according to the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs (OSAPIEA).

SAPIEA Frederick Go said the government is currently lobbying the US Trade Representative to exclude Philippine semiconductor exports, particularly assembly, testing, and packaging (ATP) activities, from the tariff.

The tariff, announced by former President Donald Trump, aims to protect US manufacturing but has an unclear implementation date.

The Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation welcomed the government’s efforts, highlighting the importance of semiconductors as the country’s top export.

Economists warn that such tariffs could significantly harm the Philippines’ export revenues and overall economic growth, emphasizing the need to diversify export markets and products.
