PHILIPPINES NEGOTIATES TO LIFT US TARIFFS ON THE COCONUT INDUSTRY

The Philippines is negotiating with the United States to exempt coconut products from the 19-pecrent tariffs recently imposed on Philippine exports, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

DTI Secretary Cristina Roque emphasized the importance of securing a tariff-free agreement to protect the vital coconut industry.

Coconut products, including coconut oil and desiccated coconut, are among the country’s top agricultural exports to the US, generating $2.2 billion last year.

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is encouraging exporters to diversify their markets to Europe, China, and Japan to lessen the impact of US tariffs.

Meanwhile, the government plans to allocate ₱12.5 billion next year to support the coconut industry, including boosting small and medium enterprises’ export capabilities.
