Scientists from the University of the Philippines are building the country’s first cryobank in Pangasinan to preserve coral genetic materials and support reef restoration.
This project, part of a broader Southeast Asian initiative, involves collaboration with researchers from Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia to establish cryobanks across the Coral Triangle region.
The cryobank uses cryopreservation, freezing coral larvae at ultra-low temperatures, to protect species threatened by climate change and destructive fishing.
The initial focus is on pocilloporid corals, known for their rapid growth and important role in reef recovery, but vulnerable to climate stress.
Researchers hope this facility will provide a foundation for future coral conservation and biodiversity efforts in the Philippines and beyond.
