The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) urged countries to establish a predictable and standardized framework under a future Global Plastics Treaty to address plastic pollution and climate change.
DENR Undersecretary Analiza Rebuelta-Teh said harmonized global rules would help attract public and private investments in sustainable waste and recycling infrastructure.
She called for binding global limits on plastic production and hazardous additives instead of focusing only on waste management and recycling.
Teh also urged stronger financial and technical support for developing countries to help them implement the treaty.
The Philippines reaffirmed its support for binding rules that hold plastic manufacturers accountable while supporting nations affected by the plastic crisis.
