The Philippines and India are set to hold their first joint maritime exercise in the West Philippine Sea, near Scarborough Shoal, marking a significant step in their defense cooperation.
AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. announced the activity aboard the Indian naval tanker INS Shakti during its historic port call in Manila.
The exercise highlights growing ties between the two democracies and their shared commitment to maritime security and regional stability amid geopolitical tensions.
This joint patrol coincides with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s upcoming visit to India, his first since taking office, where he is expected to discuss defense and economic relations with Indian leaders.
The move follows earlier government-level talks and proposals to strengthen security alliances to counter regional threats, notably from China.
