The Philippines aims to boost its geothermal energy production as part of efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in the national power mix, currently dominated by coal.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin highlighted initiatives such as including geothermal projects in the Green Energy Auction and a planned derisking facility to lower costs and encourage investment.
The country is already the third-largest geothermal producer globally, with an installed capacity of around 1,935 MW, but geothermal still accounts for only 8.5% of the power mix.
Future projects will be supported through increased funding for geophysical surveys and a $ 250 million facility, managed in collaboration with Landbank and the Asian Development Bank, to fund exploration and viable projects.
Experts noted that new technologies, including low-enthalpy wells and closed-loop systems, could unlock thousands of megawatts of untapped geothermal potential in the Philippines.
