The Philippine women’s chess team concluded their campaign at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad with a commanding 4-0 victory over Brazil in Budapest, Hungary.
This win secured them a total of 14 points, placing them joint 22nd with 14 other teams, and 24th overall after tiebreaks.
Notably, they also claimed the gold medal in Group B, marking the Philippines’ first medal in the event since 2006.
National women’s coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales hailed the achievement as a significant milestone in Philippine chess history.
Meanwhile, the men’s team faced a setback, losing 1-3 to Hungary and finishing 59th overall.
