The Philippines earned five gold medals at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth and Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru, on Thursday.
Jay-R Colonia from Zamboanga City claimed two golds in clean and jerk and total, plus a silver in snatch in the Youth men’s 49kg category, while Alexsandra Ann Diaz, also from Zamboanga, won two golds in snatch and total in the Youth women’s 45kg category.
Althea Bacaro from Cebu added a gold in snatch in the Youth women’s 40kg, alongside a silver in total and a bronze in clean and jerk.
Zamboangueña Angeline Colonia secured a silver in snatch and a bronze in total in the Junior women’s 45kg category.
The national coach praised the athletes for their discipline, while Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella expressed confidence in the future of Philippine weightlifting, with more athletes set to compete.
