PAUL SORIANO’S ‘THE FISHER’ PROMOTES PEACE AMID PHILIPPINES-CHINA TENSIONS

Filmmaker Paul Soriano’s four-year-old drama “The Fisher,” which opened in Philippine cinemas on Oct. 21, explores peace and cooperation amid tensions between the Philippines and China over the West Philippine Sea.

The film stars Mon Confiado as a Filipino fisherman and Enchong Dee as a Chinese fisherman, using their relationship to highlight how harmony can benefit both sides.

Soriano said the story was partly inspired by the maritime dispute and expressed hope that the film would encourage dialogue while entertaining audiences.

Confiado described the movie as timely and spent a month in Ilocos Norte learning fishing techniques and immersing himself in the lives of local fishermen to prepare for his role.

Despite challenging sea scenes and a delayed theatrical release, Soriano and Confiado expressed pride in the film and encouraged audiences to support original Filipino productions.
