The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) are supporting efforts to classify the synthetic cannabinoid found in “tuklaw” cigarettes as a dangerous drug under existing drug laws.
Laboratory tests confirmed that these cigarettes contain nicotine and a potent synthetic cannabinoid that can cause psychotic episodes and hallucinations.
PDEA Director General Isagani R. Nerez warned against the use of “tuklaw,” which has gained popularity among teenagers and is often sold online despite being smuggled.
The agencies are conducting a thorough review process, involving public health experts and government bodies, to ensure a balanced and effective policy.
Both PDEA and DDB emphasized that the goal is to protect public health and safety from the risks posed by this harmful substance.
