The government is set to launch an app to detect scams and deepfakes ahead of the May elections, according to Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro.
The app, part of a joint initiative between the PCO and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), will be provided to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and fact-checking organizations.
The software, purchased for P2 million, can detect deepfake content within 30 seconds.
Castro emphasized the importance of training fact-checkers to counter fake news, which could undermine the government’s credibility.
In addition to the app, the government has introduced Hotline 1326, allowing the public to report potential scams or disinformation, and Castro also proposed registering social media influencers for greater accountability.
