The family of Ninoy Aquino rejected Vice President Sara Duterte’s comparison of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, to the People Power icon, emphasizing their stark differences.
The statement, released via the Ninoy & Cory Aquino Foundation, stressed that Aquino’s assassination in 1983 under the Marcos Sr. regime cannot be equated to Duterte’s arrest by the ICC for crimes against humanity.
Former senator Leila de Lima dismissed the comparison as a “desperate attempt” to avoid accountability, while the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) also refuted the claim.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro reminded the public that Duterte once likened himself to Adolf Hitler, not Aquino.
The controversy arises amid continued People Power remembrance debates, with Sara Duterte previously silent on commemorations.
