EJ Obiena narrowly missed a medal in the men’s pole vault at the Paris Olympics, finishing fourth at the Stade De France early Tuesday.
Despite strong attempts at 5.95 meters, Obiena could not clear the height and fell short of Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis, who secured bronze after a countback tiebreaker.
The silver medal went to the United States’ Sam Kendricks, who cleared 5.95 meters on his first attempt, while Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis won gold with a 6.25-meter jump, breaking his world record.
Obiena’s performance marked a significant improvement from his 11th-place finish in 2021, despite competing with a back injury.
Earlier, Lauren Hoffman failed to advance in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, and Philippine hopes now rest on John Tolentino in the 110-meter hurdles repechage later Tuesday.
