Northern Cebu residents in San Remigio continue to face displacement as about 60 sinkholes, some hidden in residential areas, have appeared following a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in late September.
Smaller sinkholes have expanded, and larger ones worsened due to ongoing tremors, prompting authorities to declare certain areas as no-build zones and deem some homes unsafe.
Around 200–250 families, or roughly 1,000 residents, are affected, with relocation efforts complicated by damaged temporary shelters and Smart Houses.
The local government plans to develop new relocation sites in Barangay Argawanon and other areas while seeking financial support from NGOs and foreign institutions.
Experts attribute the sinkhole formation to seismic activity interacting with limestone-rich terrain, warning residents to avoid dumping debris into holes to prevent further ground instability.
