Senators are strongly opposing the revival of e-sabong, arguing that it is even more detrimental than Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs).
Sen. Joel Villanueva highlighted the severe social impacts of e-sabong, including the disappearance and presumed murder of 34 online cockfighting enthusiasts since 2022.
Villanueva has filed Senate Bill 1281 to ban all online gambling, emphasizing that while revenue is needed, it should not come at the expense of public welfare.
Sen. Imee Marcos also criticized the push to reintroduce e-sabong, calling for its permanent cessation.
Despite PAGCOR’s claims of potential improvements, Villanueva and other senators stressed that the social costs of gambling far outweigh any financial benefits.
