NEW MEASURE AIMS TO SHIELD DISASTER WORKERS’ HAZARD PAY FROM TAXATION

Senator Bong Go has filed Senate Bill 669 to amend the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, proposing tax-exempt hazard pay for disaster response personnel and accredited community volunteers during a declared state of calamity.

The bill recognizes the Philippines as one of the most disaster-prone countries due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire and typhoon belt.

Go highlighted the sacrifices of first responders, including emergency workers and volunteers, who risk their lives during disasters.

The measure requires local government units to provide tax-free hazard pay to eligible personnel, including those in disaster management offices and volunteer committees, regardless of employment status.

Funding for the hazard pay will come from the local governments overseeing the disaster response efforts.
