NEW DORMITORY TO EASE SEVERE OVERCROWDING IN MANDAUE JAIL

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Mandaue City is set to transfer 112 female detainees from an overcrowded and flood-prone jail in Barangay Looc to a newly constructed dormitory in Barangay Basak by February 2026.

The new facility, already 90% complete, features safer living conditions, an administration building, four cells, and a greenhouse for rehabilitation and livelihood programs.

Construction delays caused by a recent earthquake and typhoon postponed the original January transfer date.

The move aims to address severe overcrowding, flooding, and unhealthy conditions at the old facility, which was built for only 25 inmates.

Support from local officials and the Department of Agriculture is expected to enhance jail operations and detainee welfare once the transfer is completed.
